In the first of many measures to bring more equity to the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) community, Dutchess BOCES’ Career & Technical Institute invited Dutchess County Pride Center Executive Director Karen Marder for two talks on May 10 to highlight the center’s services and to speak about LGBTQ matters.
CTI Instructor Erin Scott applied for a grant from the It Gets Better organization’s 50 States, 50 Grants initiative that will allocate up to $10,000 to fund projects that uplift, empower and connect LGBTQ youth in schools. Only one New York school district will be announced as the winner in June.

Students in Dutchess BOCES’ Security & Law Enforcement will now put what they have been learning in the classroom to the test with the use of the VirTra learning simulation.
Dutchess BOCES is honoring Deaf Awareness Week, held this year from May 1 to 7, with posters alerting students and staff about hearing loss and deafness, designed by second year graphic design students.
Jaime Keener said the installation of 107 security cameras around the Dutchess BOCES campus is in the final stages.
“I like this system. We will benefit,” said Keener, an instructional systems research specialist at Dutchess BOCES. Live or recorded video may be seen with the security cameras.
Thirteen students from Dutchess BOCES’ Career & Technical Institute are on their way to compete at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championship in Syracuse from April 26 to 28.

The Career and Technical Institute’s Main Advisory Council biannual meeting was held April 25 in the Conference Center at Dutchess BOCES with a goal of exploring ways to expand and improve programs to prepare CTI students for the work force in the Hudson Valley.

Dutchess BOCES’ new “One Campus” is what the future of education in New York State is all about. The completion of the project was celebrated April 15 with a ribbon cutting, EXPO and open houses.
Jack Breen, a leader with decades of special and alternative education experience, is now the new acting principal of the Dutchess BOCES Alternative High School.
“I’m passionate about working with youngsters who need support. It is what I am and how I feel,” said the seasoned education veteran.
Salt Point Center received a donation of 20 used volleyballs from Downstate Juniors Volleyball Club that will be used in gym classes and in the center’s positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) volleyball activity.
