The first Main Advisory Council Breakfast of the year Oct. 9 focused on the growth in enrollment at Dutchess BOCES Career and Technical Institute, CTI’s 2024-25 goals and the expansion of the Project-Based Learning and Assessment pilot.
This bi-annual meeting brings industry and agency partners together with CTI staff to discuss matters of importance to the students they serve.
It began with a breakfast prepared and served by CTI Culinary Arts students from Chef Gabriel Ross and Chef Amanda Scoca’s classes. Principal Nick Millas told guests that enrollment data showed a large increase over the last five years.
Rosa Moshi from Educational Resources talked about Project-Based Learning and Assessment and how it helps evaluate a student’s knowledge through means other than tests and quizzes. She explained that industry and agency partners can support students by presenting real-world problems for classes to solve using this strategy.
Last year, six teachers piloted the program, with teachers receiving monthly professional development.
“Educational Resources will be working with a second cohort of teachers to provide training, coaching, and assessment as we continue to build capacity with this instructional strategy“, Millas noted.
The meeting concluded with Sharon Myers, one of two work-based learning coordinators at CTI, discussing how we as a collective group can better coordinate and prepare for recruitment and educational fairs that our partners put on around the county.
