Are you interested in developing skills in carpentry, welding, auto repair, wiring or the culinary arts?
Consider taking a class at the Dutchess BOCES Adult Learning Institute this fall!
Mastering the Art of Cooking is a new class where students will “learn about baking and pastry, different types of cuisines, homemade pasta, handling raw meat” and more, according to Chef Amanda Scoca. Safety and sanitation are also part of the course and after successful completion and an exam, students will be certified ServSafe Food Handlers.
“This course is great for someone that wants to get familiar with the kitchen whether that be for their family or if they want to work in the industry and need some background knowledge,” Scoca shared. She looks forward to working with motivated adult learners.
The new cooking class as well as other trades courses are beneficial for individuals with a variety of skill levels.
New homeowner Peihong Zhang had no prior experience before taking carpentry and skills for remodeling. Originally from China, she shared, “there isn’t a DIY culture there and I’ve never owned a home before. Being able to work on things myself is new to me.”
Zhang loved the timing of the class. “Whenever I’ve looked for similar classes at other locations, they’re during the day. This class is great for people who work a 9-5, because it’s after hours.”
Some students have basic experience and are looking to build on their skills.
“I wanted to learn more to apply in my volunteer work,” shared carpentry student Sarah Caponi. “I like that our teacher let us try a lot of different tools. So far, we tried two different saws, the impact drill, a nailer. I’ve used some of them before, but others I haven’t, so it was great to have some supervision and guidance as I tried them out.”
Others are developing professionals in the field.
Matt Bambino works full time as a maintenance and grounds worker. Previously taking a wiring class, Bambino returned for the carpentry class to build more skills and add to his resume.
“I'm just trying to move on to the next level and have better job opportunities,” he shared.
In addition to courses teaching trades, the Adult Learning Institute offers classes in dance, preparing for retirement, defensive driving, and more! Visit the registration website to find a full list and to sign up.
