Salt Point Center is buzzing with activity even during the summer with the Extended School Year Program (ESY) running from early July to mid-August.
This half-day program focuses on practicing skills learned during the school year and helps students avoid learning loss or regression over the summer according to SPC Assistant Principal Duane Sharrock.
“It's not just reading and math skills that we're trying to protect from regression. We're also trying to protect from loss of skills from the related services,” which include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, and counseling.
The group of students that participate in ESY is not the same as the population during the school year.
During the school year, the school serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade, while in the summer, students in kindergarten through high school attend. In addition to students from SPC or Resilience Academy recommended to attend the program, students that don’t have one at their school attend.
There is a lot of fun built into these summer days at SPC.
Each Friday, students enjoy a different communitywide activity, including crafts, dance parties, outdoor fun, and more.
“One of the main goals of having these communitywide activities is to get kids used to being around large groups of people, socializing at a larger scale than they do with just their classmates,” Sharrock shared.
Classes also work on unique projects throughout the summer. They will show their families and friends what they have accomplished at the ESY Showcase on Aug.15.
