Ten seniors from the Computer-Networking program at Dutchess BOCES’ Career & Technical Institute attended Global Foundries’ Annual Manufacturing Day on October 7th to learn about manufacturing and engineering careers and to make a presentation on circuits.

The visit began with and introduction by Global Foundries executive Anthony Yu and then moved on to two rounds of hands-on, thought-provoking activities. 312 students from schools throughout the county attended.  Employees from various departments also held a panel discussion with students on career opportunities. Global Foundries’ Ann McDonald (Mfg. Operations Manager) was on hand while Joy Fierro (Software and Applications Engineer) facilitated the BOCES student's morning tasks.

After closing remarks, BOCES’ students presented their RaspberryPi integrated circuit solution to demonstrate problem-solving skills in terms of coordinating a light show keyed in on particular rhythms or melodies in a music selection. Many lively conversations between students, technicians, and engineers prevailed.

“On the ride back to CTI, the students commented on how impressed they were with the engineers,” said Mitchell Shron, principal of CTI.  “They spent a lot of time talking to them.
The students were very interested in seeing more of Global Foundries.”

Global Foundries, an international manufacturer of the world’s most advanced semiconductors, has marked their one-year anniversary in East Fishkill.  Manufacturing Day is an annual event held in North America to encourage manufacturing companies to open their doors and exhibit modern manufacturing and cultivate interest in engineering and manufacturing careers.
